On Track This Week 2015 - Round 5 - Grand Prix of Indianapolis

First of all, apologies for the late upload. We were dealing with some technical difficulties at our N.American headquarters at post time. Moving on...

Round 5 of the Verizon IndyCar Series kicks off today at the Historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the 2nd running of the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Like the Red Headed Step Child, this oddly placed road race plonks down like a speed bump just a week after everyone was in a frenzy over the start Month of May.

Nonetheless, it is here, and despite the naysayers, it was an exciting event last year, so there is no reason not to expect more of the same, if not a bit more slicing and dicing now that everyone is used to the new aerokits, and has a fresh supply of bits and bobs.

What Happened Last Time

Pole: Sebastian Saavadra
Podium: Simon Pagenaud, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Helio Castroneves

Highlights from the last race:

Here is a look at how the current field has performed at this track: Driver Performance - GP of Indianapolis

What to Expect This Time
Well, there will not be a standing start, so we don't expect a cluster at the start this year, which is a good thing.

Other than the possibility of some wet weather over the course of the weekend, look for the track records to drop, and the field to be competitive.

Talking Points

Reigning Champion: Will Power
2015 Points Leader: Juan Pablo Montoya
2015 ROTY Leader: Gabby Chaves
2015 Manufacturers Leader: Honda
2015 Road Leader: Juan Pablo Montoya
2015 Oval Leader: n/a

Here's what Simon Pagenaud, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Jack Hawksworth had to say about 2015 Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis.

Who's the Favorite?
Paging Team Penske, Team Penske to the starting grid... and basically anyone with a Chevy logo emblazoned on their car.

Who could surprise?
Other than the usual suspects, Jack Hawksworth had a very good outing last year, though he's still struggling to find the sweet spot with this year's car. Luca Filippe has also been very good on the road courses, so keep your eye on him.

If we had to pick just one?
We think we're looking for Simon to repeat, thought Bourdais has been knocking on the door all season.

The details...

Event: Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis
Venue: Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Infield)
Track Type: 14-turn, 2.439-mile permanent road course

TV: We're back on ABC... Allen Bestwick mans the helm, with Scott Goodyear and Eddie Cheever Jr. backing him up.

Web/radio: Thankfully, we can still listen to all of the sessions (and the race) via IMS Radio Network on www.indycar.com and for those in the US with Verizon service, via INDYCAR 14 app. (The IMS Radio Network race broadcast also is on member stations, Sirius 209 and XM 209)

NEW THIS YEAR
IndyCar is providing some live streaming feeds for certain sessions via YouTube, (and on the T&S page) with live commentary from IMS radio.

Also, ESPN is expanding it's reach into Europe with ESPNplayer.com
If you're in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (excluding the UK, France, Italy and South Africa) You can purchase a digital subscription service and catch live and on-demand coverage of the Verizon IndyCar Series season.
